October 2007
- The South Carolina Diversity Council, in partnership with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, awarded Sonoco the 2007 South Carolina Excellence in Workplace Diversity Award.
September 2007
- The Southern Region of the International Association of Business Communicators awarded Sonoco a Silver Quill of Excellence for its 2006 rebranding of the Company's employee benefits communications materials and a Silver Quill of Merit for the 2006 redesign of www.sonoco.com at its annual conference in Tampa, Fla., U.S.
- Hewitt Associates, in partnership with The RBL Group and FORTUNE magazine, named Sonoco one of North America's Top 20 Companies for Leaders.
- The Lexington, S.C., U.S., County Solid Waste Management Program recognized Sonoco Recycling's Columbia, S.C., operation for its effective school recycling programs. In 2006, two Lexington County school districts recycled more than 700,000 pounds of material.
August 2007
- The Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Council named Marc Ensign, Sonoco's director of professional services and international sourcing, its 2007 Buyer of the Year.
July 2007
- For the 13th consecutive year, Sonoco was listed on KLD Indexes' Domini 400 Social Index, a float-adjusted, market capitalization weighted common stock index of 400 U.S. companies demonstrating leadership in corporate and social responsibility.
- The Sanitation Boards of Los Angeles County awarded Sonoco's City of Industry, Calif., U.S., facility a Good Corporate Citizen Award for the fourth straight year, saying the plant served as a role model for other industrial facilities by complying with all county wastewater discharge requirements.
- Sonoco's 2006 Annual Report received a Bronze Award in the League of American Communications Professionals' 2006 Vision Awards, scoring 95 of a possible 100 points.
June 2007
- The Gravure Association of America honored Sonoco with two 2007 Golden Cylinder Awards—one for the vividly colored, crisply printed flexible package Sonoco produces for President's Choice Dark & Milk Concerto chocolate cookies and another for the bright green and silver Sonoco package used for Lark 1 Ultra Menthol cigarettes.
- The Safety Council of Western New England presented the Chairman's Award to Sonoco's Pioneer Valley tube and core plant in Holyoke, Mass., U.S., for having the lowest injury incident rate in Massachusetts.
May 2007
- Sonoco's Devens, Mass., U.S., facility recently qualified for recertification as an OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) worksite, a designation assigned by the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration. The Devens facility remains one of only 1,000 U.S. workplaces to have earned the coveted safety honor. The plant first received OSHA VPP STAR status in 2004.
- The Stark County Safety Council and Ohio's Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) recognized the Sonoco Phoenix Warner Road facility with three safety-performance related awards:
- An excellence in safety award for showing support, service and commitment to the Stark County Safety Council.
- A certificate recognizing the facility's 100 percent outstanding safety performance. This BWC award honors facilities that have operated for an entire year without a lost-time injury or illness.
- A special award from BWC's safety and hygiene division for operating without a lost-time accident from August 15, 1999 to December 31, 2006 and achieving 920,281 hours worked through 2006.
April 2007
- On April 5, Daramic, LLC, the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of battery separators named Sonoco's Morganfield, Ky., U.S. tube and core plant its 2006 Supplier of the Year. The facility's efficient handling of waste corrugated and paper cores, exceptional sales and technical service and competitive pricing were cited by Daramic.
- CUNO's quality assurance department recently presented the company's molded plastics operation with its first Certified Supplier Award.
March 2007
- In its March 19 issue, Fortune magazine named Sonoco the sixth most admired company in the United States' packaging and container industry.
February 2007
- Two Sonoco packages have been named 2006 AmeriStar Award winners by the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IOPP). Both Sonoco and customer Cadbury Adams™ received coveted AmeriStar Award statues for Sonoco's new Trident® gum 18-count, laser-score package that opens like a package of cigarettes.
- Sonoco’s second AmeriStar Award was for the new multilayer, thermoformed, oval-tapered plastic tub Hampton Farms® used to launch a line of gourmet roasted peanuts.
- Sonoco's stand-up pouches for John Soules Foods and flexible pouches for Sun-Maid's line of dried fruit are in the Flexible Packaging Association's (FPA) Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Innovation Showcase 2007. The FPA will announce which of the packages in the showcase are the winners at its annual meeting in Florida.
January 2007
- The South Carolina Wildlife Federation recently presented Jane Hiller, education specialist at the Columbia, S.C., U.S., recovered paper facility with the coveted 2006 Conservation Communication Award for her work in promoting conservation in South Carolina.
- Sonoco's Winston-Salem, M.C., U.S., recovered paper facility has been accepted into OSHA's prestigious Safety and Health Achievement Program (SHARP). To participate in the program, the plant had to have Lost-Workday Injury and Illness and Total Recordable Case rates below the national average, participate in a complete hazard identification survey and correct any hazards identified, involve employees in the consultation process and maintain a safety and health management system that meets OSHA's 1989 Safety and Health Program Management guidelines. Certified SHARP sites receive 1-year exemptions from OSHA's scheduled inspections.
