100 years of Sonoco

The sculpture People Build Businesses was commissioned in 1998 and completed in May 1999
Sonoco celebrated 100 years of packaging on May 10, 1999. In honor of this event, a bronze sculpture was commissioned to capture the spirit of Sonoco people – past, present and future – and the culture and values they represent. The sculpture, titled People Build Businesses, is located in front of the company's corporate headquarters in Hartsville, South Carolina, USA.

Each of Sonoco's leaders since its founding in 1899 has attributed the Company's growth and success to its people. As a tribute to past, present and future members of the global Sonoco family, we commissioned Charles C. Parks, of Wilmington, Delaware, one of America's most renowned sculptors, to create a work in bronze that would capture the spirit of Sonoco people and the culture and values they represent. The artwork is located in front of the Company's corporate headquarters in Hartsville, South Carolina, in a space designed by landscape architect, Sheila Wertimer of Charleston, South Carolina.

It is hoped that the sculpture will serve as a continuing reminder of the importance Sonoco places on ensuring a safe and people-friendly environment where each individual is accorded personal dignity and respect.
