  • Purchased Crellin Holding Inc. with plants in the United States and the Netherlands.

  • Board of Directors appointed Leo Benatar, 63, chairman and chief executive officer to Engraph.

  • Closed the East Greenville, Pa., U.S., composite can plant.
  • Announced closing of the Tacoma, Wa., U.S., plant, effective, Jan. 1.
  • Trademark issued for SOFTUCK®, a paper shipping cone.
  • Trademark issued for RCB® (stylized) for plastic bags made using recycled resins.
  • Announced signing of a definitive merger agreement that Sonoco will acquire Engraph.

  • Russell King, Jr., president and COO, retired after 37 years with Sonoco.
  • Purchased Harland & Son Limited, a label producer in Hull, England.
  • Engraph obtained 100% ownership of the Ramallo, Escribano and Company partnership.
  • Hartsville Corrugating Department achieved a world safety record for a paper mill operation by completing three years without a recordable injury.
  • Introduced Aegis-ECF cushion packaging.
  • Maurice Richardson promoted to president and COO of Engraph.

1995

  • Listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the stock symbol "SON."
  • Completed the purchase of the Edinburgh, Ind., U.S., flexible packaging plant.
  • Incorporated Sonoco do Brazil, operating in San Paulo and Curitiba in Brazil.
  • 5% stock dividend declared for all shareholders.
  • Purchased the Pontcharra manufacturing location of Sofratube located near Grenoble, France.
  • Sonoco Engraph purchased Cricket Converters, Inc.
  • Acquired 25% ownership stake in Demolli Industria Cartaria SRL, Italy.

1996

  • Began consumer and industrial packaging operations in Indonesia through Sonoco Asia, and investment partners, P.T. Istethmar.
  • Launched Sonoco Internet site (http://www.sonoco.com); Created internal web site (SONOnet).
  • Acquired Hamilton Hybar, Inc.
  • Closed Laval, Quebec, Canada, fibre partitions plant.
  • Acquired Specialty Packaging Group, Inc. of Wausau, Wis., U.S.
  • Leo Benatar, chairman and chief executive officer to Engraph, retired from Sonoco and the board of directors.
  • Granted trademark for Labelsaver®, a fibre partition used to protect products in their shipping containers.

1997

  • Issued trademark for Timesaver 2000®, a paperboard package.
  • Annual Report became available on line (www.sonoco.com).
  • Purchased Corepak LTD in Sittingbourne, England.
  • Formed a joint venture with For-Plas for Sonoco For-Plas headquartered in Araras, Brazil. Sonoco owns 51%, For-Plas, 49%.
  • Acquired a 50% interest in Enstel Manufacturing in Ontario, Canada.
  • Introduced the first cushioned plastic core for film, tape and other products that require tightly wrapped packages.
  • Opened textile tube manufacturing operation in Yadkinville, N.C., U.S.
  • Increased recovered paper prices, primarily OCC, $50 per ton.
  • Signed a long-term agreement with Pillsbury to supply 100% of its composite cans at their Denison, Texas, U.S.; New Albany, Ind, U.S.; and Midland, Ontario, Canada, plants.
  • Selected by Pillsbury to be its preferred technology packaging development supplier for current ad future refrigerated baked goods needs.
  • Purchased Industrial Machine Company of St. Louis, Mo., U.S.
  • Completed joint venture with the Rock-Tenn Company to fibre partitions.
  • Purchased all outstanding shares of Fibre Resource Recovery Corp., giving Sonoco 100% ownership.
  • Announced a new IPD precut/outsourcing facility in Keyser, W. Va., U.S., to begin in 1998.
  • Repurchased $150 million of the company's common stock.

  • Sold the label and carton business.
  • Sold industrial container business to Grief Bros.
  • Announced agreement to sell North American Labels business.
  • Announced the purchase of Burk, a German plastics firm.
  • Acquired tube converting operations and paper mill of LaRochette group in France.
  • Board named Peter Browning to succeed Charlie Coker as CEO.
  • Purchased remaining 50% interest of Cascades/Sonoco.
  • Hamilton Hybar sold.

1999

  • C.D. Spangler, Jr. elected to Sonoco's board.
  • Acquired Wood Composites Technology, a composite reel manufacturer.
  • Completed sell of Harlands Labels and Label Machinery business in the U.K.
  • Celebrated Centennial in May.
  • Announced purchase of Crown Cork and Seal's Composite Can.
  • Announced new composite can plant in Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico.
  • Purchased Flexible Packaging Division of Graphics Packaging Corporation.
  • Completed purchase of Crown Cork and Seal's Composite Can business.
  • Completed purchase of Flexible Packaging Division of Graphic Packaging Corporation.

2000

  • Harris E. DeLoach, Jr. named Sonoco's Chief Operating Officer.
  • Closed Woodyard and Crosstie Operations in Hartsville, S.C., U.S.
  • Consolidated Yadkinville tube plant operations into plant at Elon College, N.C., U.S.
  • Peter C. Browning resigned as President & CEO; Harris E. DeLoach, Jr., named as successor.
  • Sonoco awarded $150 million contract from Nestle, for flexible packaging business.
  • Purchased Amcor's Australian Composite Can Operations.
  • Closed Spokane, Wash., U.S., tube plant.
