How does Sonoco promote safety?
For more than 100 years, it has been Sonoco's policy to provide a safe and healthful environment for the protection of its most vital resource—its employees. We believe that all personal injuries can and must be prevented. Although the responsibility for safety begins and ends with Sonoco's president, the responsibility is shared throughout the organization. Division vice presidents are responsible for their division; plant managers for their plants; supervisors are accountable for the safety of their groups; and every individual is accountable for his or her own safety. Every employee at every level is expected to fully accept responsibility for his or her own safety and for the safety of those with whom they work.

In addition to having its own rigorous safety and injury prevention program, each location also has an employee safety team or teams. Involving employees in the safety process has helped improve safety performance worldwide. We also recognize locations that achieve significant safety milestones through company publications.

How is Sonoco involved in the community?
We believe it our responsibility to help build the communities where we do business, both as a company and as individuals. Sonoco invests approximately one percent of the company's consolidated pretax income into education, health and welfare, the arts and the environment in communities where we have manufacturing or sales locations. We also offer a program of matching employee gifts to colleges and universities.

In Darlington County, where Hartsville and our headquarters are located, we have ongoing partnerships with every elementary, middle, junior high and senior high school and provide needed supplies and volunteer time. We also encourage our salaried employees to become mentors, during regular work hours, for students in Darlington County's elementary schools.

How does Sonoco protect the environment?
Sonoco was one of the first environmentally sensitive companies in the world and has been a leader in recycling since 1920.

We have always practiced the three Rs—recycle, reduce and reuse. We use recycled materials whenever possible, design many of our products to include recovered paper. And we're one of the world's largest consumers of recovered paper, collecting approximately three million tons annually by partnering with governments, customers and municipalities globally to implement effective environmental strategies. We also continually reexamine our manufacturing processes to eliminate needless waste and reduce energy consumption.
