Supplier diversity
Sonoco purchases a variety of products and services through its supply management department. We look for well-qualified, performance-minded and customer-focused suppliers. We expect all of our suppliers to provide the highest quality products and services, at the best cost to the company, in a timely manner and with the best service.

Our supplier program supports supplier diversity, which Sonoco considers an integral part of its overall business performance. In fact, the Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Council named Sonoco's director of professional services and international sourcing, its 2007 Buyer of the Year.

Our commitment to supplier diversity
Sonoco supports supplier diversity because it provides a distinct competitive advantage. Often diverse suppliers are able to react to the market more quickly and because they are smaller, tend to have lower operating costs. As part of our overall supply management program, Sonoco is committed to:
  • Establishing relationships that make the company cost competitive, while maintaining our reputation for quality
  • Encouraging qualified small, minority and women-owned businesses to bid on supply contracts
  • Creating long-term partnerships based on cooperation and continuous feedback
  • Providing professional, courteous and fair treatment for all current and potential suppliers

Categorization as a diverse supplier
Sonoco defines a minority-owned business as:
  • A company that is at least 51 percent owned, managed and controlled by one or more minority persons who are U.S. citizens. In this context, a minority person is an African American, Asian-Indian American, Asian-Pacific American, Hispanic American or Native American.

Sonoco defines a women-owned business as:

  • A company that is at least 51 percent owned, managed and controlled by one or more women who are U.S. citizens.

Sonoco recognizes certification of minority-owned and women-owned (diverse) businesses from the following organizations:

  • U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)
    • Small Disadvantaged and Section 8(a) Businesses
  • National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) or any regional council
    • Minority-owned businesses
  • Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) or any of its partner organizations
    • Women-owned businesses
  • Any issuing city or state agency

What we look for in a supplier
All aspects of Sonoco's businesses enjoy the advantage of diversity. We benefit from diversity in our workforce, our customers and our supplier base. We set high standards of performance for ourselves and for the products and services we produce. We expect nothing less from our suppliers. Just a few of the areas of excellence we review:
